"They hate us"
Lancing the Boil
"The world does not hate the United States. Of course, it envies us. Precisely because it is privately impressed by our unparalleled success, it judges America by a utopian measure in which anything less than perfection is written off as failure. We risk everything, our critics abroad almost nothing. So the hope for our failures naturally gives reinforcement to the bleak reality of their inaction."
"The Europeans expect our protection. The Mexicans risk their lives to get here. Indians and Japanese want closer relations. The old commonwealth appreciates our strength in defense of the West. Even the hostile Iranians, North Koreans, Cubans, Venezuelans, Chinese, and radical Islamists — despite the saber-rattling rhetoric — wonder whether we are naïve and idealistic rather than cruel and calculating. All this we rarely consider when we read of anti-Americanism in our major newspapers or hear another angry (and usually well-off) professor or journalist recite our sins."
A common meme in the media and on the left is "Why do they hate us?" Generally followed by a list of supposed American sins that sum up to a paradgm that the US must rurn to socialism and give its power, wealth and soverignty to other people.

I don't know where to start Mr.Dog.
The world does not hate the United States. Of course, it envies us.
THE WORLD. US.
I'm sorry you feel that way.
the hope for our failures naturally gives reinforcement to the bleak reality of their inaction
Its unsustainable. It will fail. Its not “YOU” communally or “US” that say that. Its unsustainable.
The old commonwealth appreciates our strength in defense of the West
from what? We are not at war. It's not happening- yet.
wonder whether we are naïve and idealistic rather than cruel and calculating
I've been wondering this quite a bit.
(The left says we must) run to socialism and give ... power, wealth and soverignty to other people.
I don't understand this. The US doesn't have a sovereign since “YOU” gained independence from “US.”
I don't disagree that "the left" is as archaic and full of shit as "the right" but to me the best thing we should gain from "Socialism" would be society working for the good of others rather than in competition.
"Soverign" does not mean "King".
sovereignty:
1. top authority: supreme authority, especially over a state
2. independence: the right to self-government without interference from outside
3. independent state: a politically independent state
I can see where the confusion arises. Kings like to talk about themselves as "Sovereign". Well, naturally, a King is supposed to embody the soveriegnty of the state which he rules. In other words, its not the nation, or country or empire that is the independent power, but the King in his person. Convenient for him, I guess.
Every independent nation is soveriegn. The USA is a soveriegn nation, Switzerland is a soveriegn nation, Japan is a soveriegn nation.
For example: Wales is NOT a soverien nation, its a part of a larger politcal structure. One could argue that it has partial soveriegnty. Tho not as much as American states, I believe.
But you guys talk like a sovereign "WE AMERICA" loads of people are going to hate that, if you want to call them "The World" or if the person you quote does, I'm sad that he feels this way.
I thought the 21st century was going to be a much brighter place.
